CEU Course Description

Although largely preventable, falls represents a tremendous health and economic burden, particularly among older adults.  The goals of this CEU course are to measure awareness and uptake of the six fall prevention recommendations; explore the perceptions of older people with mild dementia and mild cognitive impairment, and their family carers, about falling, falls risk and the acceptability of falls prevention interventions; gauge the extent to which providers are assessing fall risk in older adult patients and referring these patients to evidence-based fall prevention interventions; investigate the perceived benefits and barriers of an evidence-based, home-based fall prevention program (FPP) among seniors, general practitioners, home care nurses, and physiotherapists; and explore how allied health professionals are making fall prevention practice routine in primary care and the factors that influence their doing so.

CEU Course Objectives

1.  Describe the four key concepts of the Normalization Process Theory.

2.  Determine which age group has significantly higher rates of falls and the highest cost per capita for falls.

3.  Explain what fall prevention strategies of compensation, rehabilitation, and education need to be in order to be effective.

4.  Identify the most common assistive feature in the home in the United States.

5.  List three of the most frequently cited barriers to fall risk assessment.

6.  Provide six recommendations for fall prevention in community settings that fit within public health’s role.
