CEU Course Description

Pain is the experience of unpleasant perceptions and emotions related to tissue potentially harmed by an injury or gradual degeneration. Pain is the body’s signal for tissue damage, and this signal allows healing to take place. Sometimes, the perception of pain is not equivalent to actual tissue damage. This is typically what someone experiences with chronic pain. Other symptoms that one may experience along with pain include but are not limited to joint stiffness, short or stiff muscles, hypermobility, poor coordination, and joint crepitus. In this course, physical therapists and physical therapist assistants will learn strategies to help patients manage their pain and symptoms through behavior management, understanding the psychology of pain, pharmacological approaches, and stress management through course material and clinical scenarios.

CEU Course Objectives

1. Identify elements of the psychology of pain that apply to the experience of those in acute or chronic pain
2. Recognize techniques for behavior modification for patients experiencing pain and symptoms related to an injury
3. Summarize stress management, pharmacology, and other strategies for pain and symptom management that may be beneficial to patients
