CEU Course Description

Annually, around 800,000 people in the United States have a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). CVA, also known as “stroke” is a sudden interruption of blood flow to the brain, resulting in damage to brain tissue. This can lead to a wide range of physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges for those affected. Physical therapy is a crucial component of the rehabilitation journey, helping stroke survivors regain their independence, mobility, and overall well-being. This course will explore types of CVAs, clinical presentation, prevalence, anatomy, outcome tests, rehabilitation considerations, and case studies. After this course, physical therapists and physical therapist assistants will be well-versed in the clinical presentation and best plans of care for their patients undergoing CVA rehabilitation.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Identify the various types of cerebrovascular accidents and clinical presentation of each type
  2. Recognize rehabilitation considerations, timelines, complications, and protocols for CVA
  3. Recall the prevalence and patient populations most susceptible to stroke for prevention referrals and understanding risks to patients
  4. Expand upon screening tools commonly used to assess level of involvement in Alzheimer's patients.
  5. Review types of exercise programs that should be considered in order to provide simple, repetitive and safe exercises given problem-solving skills are compromised
