CEU Course Description

Implicit bias is an unconscious judgment of diverse characteristics among those different from oneself. Unfortunately, implicit bias exists within healthcare on similar levels as society at large. It is crucial that physical therapists and other healthcare providers recognize and respond appropriately to reduce implicit biases in healthcare. This will improve patient outcomes by treating each patient nonjudgmentally and allowing active participation of patients in their care. This training will provide resources on how to recognize and respond to implicit biases so that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants can improve patient care in diverse populations.

CEU Course Objectives

  1. Report the causes and effects of implicit bias and how it relates to the practice of physical therapy
  2. Identify strategies for increasing awareness of implicit biases that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants can implement in their daily work
  3. Relate different social determinants of health and barriers to care to different causes of implicit bias that impact the quality of healthcare
